Below are the honors requirements for accounting and business degrees. In 2018, the Calvin honors program was updated; follow the guidelines below to ensure that you're reading the information that's relevant to you.

If you're looking to join the honors program

If you're a new or prospective student interested in joining the honors program, the information below does not apply to you. Instead, see the Honors and Collegiate Scholars webpage to learn more about the honors experience at Calvin. We encourage you to also consult with an academic advisor to learn more about the new honors program.

If you're currently enrolled in the pre-2018 honors program

If you're currently enrolled in the honors program, you should refer to the requirements below, which still apply to you. We encourage you to also consult with your academic advisor to see if your honors experience will be affected by the changes in the honors program.

Accounting honors requirements

124 hour program (BS in Accountancy)

  1. A minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 and a total of six honors courses (18 hours minimum) overall, including at least two honors courses outside the major;
  2. At least three honors courses in the major, one of which must consist of a 300-level course taught by an accounting faculty member. At least one of the courses in the department should be taken before the senior year;
  3. A GPA in the major of at least 3.3;
  4. Completion of a thesis or project in Business 390H (see below) with a grade of at least B (3.0).

Business honors requirements

  1. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 and total of six honors courses (18 hours minimum) overall, including at least two honors courses outside the major;
  2. At least three honors courses in the business department, one of which is ordinarily taken before the senior year;
  3. A GPA in the major of at least 3.3;
  4. Completion of a thesis or project in Business 390H (see below) with a grade of at least B (3.0).

Honors Thesis

The honors thesis in Business 390 may be a business plan, research paper, or other major written deliverable demonstrating individual initiative, mastery of the subject matter domain pertaining to the student’s major or concentration, collection of data or consultation of sources beyond those presented in class, and a sustained effort proportional to the number of credit hours being awarded for Business 390.
